How to Negotiate a Job Offer With Confidence

Negotiating a job offer feels risky, but declining to negotiate has a cost too - most employers build some room into their initial offer, and not asking means leaving that room unused.
Start by getting the full offer in writing before you respond. Base salary is only one part of the picture; bonus structure, equity, start date, and remote flexibility are all negotiable in most cases.
When you respond, lead with enthusiasm, then ask, not demand. "I'm excited about this role - based on my research and experience, I was expecting a base closer to X. Is there flexibility there?" gives the employer room to say yes without feeling cornered.
If the number can't move, ask about the things that can: a signing bonus, an earlier performance review, or additional vacation days. A good offer is rarely just one number - it's a package, and packages have more flexible edges than headlines suggest.
